Emergency Services, Hospitalizations and Mental Health Care for Adolescents and Adults with ASD
Author
ACT - Autism Community Training
Summary
This ACT - Autism Community Training video discusses the challenges that individuals with an Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) often experience when accessing appropriate healthcare, particularly when navigating between sectors (health and social services), transitioning across age groups, and finding specialized expertise. As a result of these challenges, emergency services can end up being one pathway to mental health care. A current study that examines the use of emergency services and psychiatric hospitalization in a large sample of adolescents and adults with ASD in Ontario is discussed, and implications for better supporting health care interventions are suggested.
